Trivia and haunting facts[]

It took more than 70 years to find the wreck site despite it being in a known location.

There were only 20 life boats available for passengers to escape in, and most of the lifeboats were not filled to maximum capacity. If they had filled them to capacity twice as many people would have survived.

The captain, Edward John Smith, was one of the many people who died when she went down. He

made no attempts to save himself.

The titanic was in service for less than one week before the collision with the iceberg.

Since she was discovered in 1985, many artifacts have been recovered and put on display at museums around the world.

The Titanic disaster led to the creation of the international ice patrol, an organization which gives ships warnings of ice in the area. The sinking also led to new laws being written which required ships to carry enough lifeboats for everyone on board.

The crew of the Titanic was not very prepared for such an emergency. It was over an hour before the first lifeboat was lowered. The ship took between 2 1/2 to 3 hours to sink completely. Also, the captain canceled the training drills on the day of the sinking.

The titanic was built so that if four watertight compartments flooded the ship would stay

afloat. However after the titanic sideswiped the iceberg, five of the compartments flooded dooming the ship and many of the passengers.

For a long time, it was believed that she sunk in one piece despite the fact that ship broke in two above the surface. When her wreck was discovered, they discovered that she fully broke in two pieces.
